Dairy Market is sited in the Monticello Dairy building, built in 1936 as the first brick-and-mortar location for the beloved Charlottesville business. Originally an ice cream company, the working dairy also sold milk, butter, and cheese; the building quickly became a community gathering place known for its ice cream parlor and event room. Today, the expansive spaces feature nostalgic black and white photos that evoke the building’s history.

When Thomas Hall planned a weekend road trip to Blacksburg, Virginia, he added an unusual tourist attraction to his itinerary: the Dairy Market in Charlottesville. Hall heard about the new food hall in the historic Monticello Dairy Building in downtown Charlottesville and wanted to see it. "It was new, it was different and it was an easy place to eat new and varied food outside," says Hall, a lawyer from Richmond, Virginia. "We also want to avoid super-crowded destinations this summer, especially with unvaccinated kids." The Dairy Market is one of thousands of unusual attractions finding their way onto summer vacation itineraries this year.

Stony Point Development Group demonstrates sustainability leadership with Leed® Silver Certification

“Achieving LEED Silver is a monumental task and one we are very proud to have accomplished, said Josh Batman, Stony Point Development Group Vice President “Especially in a complicated adaptive re-use project like Dairy Market. It requires collaboration from everyone who touches the building. We were blessed with a fantastic project team and deeply committed Owners who pushed Dairy Market over our original target of certification only to achieve the recognition of Silver.”

Historic Monticello Dairy

Dairy Market is the adaptive reuse of the historic 1937 Monticello Dairy manufacturing and distribution facility to a new food hall. Dairy Market will be a vibrant community hub for local restaurants, food venders, a brewery, and retail shops. The Dairy Market entrance will be expanded to a double height light-filled space that welcomes patrons in a refreshed and lively environment with industrial-inspired, modern finishes. A new pedestrian terrace will activate Grady Avenue and add desired outdoor gathering space. Nestled within the back of Dairy Market is a contemporary four-story Class A office building; an addition wrapped in copper, zinc, and brick in a manner that both complements the existing industrial details of the historic Dairy while distinguishing it as a separate element.
